Press Report from Royston Golf Club 26.7.10
Steve Rogers and Mark Bonnett tied for the prestigious Pulsatilla Cup at Royston Golf Club over the weekend. The players tied on a nett score of 136, 4 under par after 36 holes and now face an eighteen hole play-off to decide the winner. Three handicapper, Chris Watson led the way after the first round on Saturday with a fine 66, but with eighteen other players within four shots, it was always going to be a close finish. Trevor Sweeting (8 handicap) came storming through the field with a brilliant 65 to finish on 138, the same mark as Richard Howorth (5), Adam Dyer (12), Stewart Hart (14), Peter Rutter (3) and Andy Ball (16). Bonnett, however went steadily about his business and with the greens slick and true, used his putter to great effect, finishing with a birdie at the last for a 67 to add to his opening 69. Rogers, playing in the final group also birdied the last to tie after rounds of 67 and 69.
The single stableford, played on Sunday saw former Captain, Barry Rouse play the best nine holes of his golfing career to amass 40 points. After scoring only 14 points on the outward nine, he blew the field apart, shooting one under par for his back nine and 26 points. Mick Rowland took second spot on countback from Martin Pendrick.
Kathy Musgrave returned to form and won the Ladies Challenge Cup on Tuesday. The fifteen handicapper played some flawless golf to finish with a nett 68 and a two shot margin over her nearest competitor, Tina Collins. Collins, returning after injury, had a chance to catch Musgrave, but a triple bogey on the sixteenth put paid to her chances. Mary Mitchell was third and Sheila Wood fourth.
