Weekly News July 1st

Last Sunday the club hosted a very enjoyable and relaxing Family Fun Day. Amongst the Putting and Par 3 competitions, there was the ever-popular Bouncy Castle and Silent Disco, with a fabulous BBQ, all set outside in the glorious weekend sunshine. The Club staff worked tirelessly and thank all those who attended for making the afternoon such a success.

Of course, there was plenty of golf over the weekend too.

The Memorial Trophy, played in memory of Past Lady Captain, Rita Turner, was won by George Crotty with 39 points. He was followed by Jamie Kidd with 38 on count back. Out of the Ladies Section, Vice-Captain Sandy Griffin came in first with 35 points beating Lady Captain Kim Bradfield on count back. Later that afternoon the Vernon Putting Trophy, a 36 hole competition on the Putting Green, was won by Tom Hanson for the second year running, with Paul Toby Runner Up. On Sunday Tom Woods won the Men’s Medal with nett 67 and Jon Jo Pitts’ nett 68 meant he is the winner of the Centenary Final which was being played at the same time. Meanwhile the Ladies Scratch Team were out and won against Girton.

Other results for the Ladies were a win at last in the Jean Wilkinson County Competition against the Gogs at home on Tuesday. Yet again Helen Steverson won her game, as did Sandra Williams, Libby Toby and Kim Bradfield. On Thursday the Ladies played in the Lady Captain’s Am Am – a 12 hole game in teams of 3. The winning group were Moya Allison, Libby Toby and Lynn Barker.

The Seniors played against Whitehill on Monday and lost 3 half to 4 half. The Vets Centenary Plate was won by Walter McLellan with 36 points over Sam Wallace and Friday’s Scratch match against Stocks was lost in a very close finish. Although Royston Seniors remain top of their league at present, they have just one more home game and four away.

Finally the Thursday Roll Up was won by David Tomkins with 36 points over Mial Walker’s 35 on count back. le(o.cat
