Weekly news round up September 24th

The ladies Section are celebrating reaching the Semi Final and Final of the Cambs and Hunts Jean Wilkinson Competition last Monday. They battled positively over several rounds this season to play at St Ives. For a small membership, they performed remarkably, beating Girton in the Semis but were eventually beaten by The Gog Magog team in the afternoon Final.
Other news for the Ladies – In the Friendly match last week against Bourn, Royston won 4 – 0. Yvonne Rogers won the Vets Trophy on Tuesday and Pam Bonnett came first in the Ladies Charity Medal on Thursday with a nett 73.The Ladies also went over to Saffron Walden to play their annual Bowen Cup match. After holding the Trophy for the last 2 years, Royston lost to a very strong Saffron Walden team.
On the Men’s front, a very successful, but wet Men’s Invitation took place on Saturday afternoon and yet another Hole In One was scored on the 16th. Other results include, Mark Westwood leading the way in the Men’s Medal last Saturday with a nett 67, followed closely by Martin Castle on 68. In the Midweek Golfer’s Medal Keith Cridland won with a nett 69, followed by Eddie Collins on count back. Allen Miller won the Thursday Roll Up, with Alan Lakey in second place. The Saturday Swindle was won by Chris Kivotos with 39 points with Dannie Van Der Westhuizen and Simon Bradfield both on 38.
Finally on Sunday in the torrential rain, only a few braved the conditions to play in the Men’s Stableford Competition which was won by Ben Geldart with 35 points over Trevor Sweeting on 34. However only 2 ladies were prepared to enter the Centenary Cup Competition that afternoon and in surprisingly sunny weather completed the medal round, with Sandy Griffin coming in first and Kim Bradfield in second.
